A body massage is an essential part of a holistic procedure that affects all systems of the body equally; be it the digestive, elimination, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic, endocrine or nervous system. The best body massage follows a series of specific manipulations with the hands on the soft tissue of the body and has a therapeutic effect.
Importance of Body Massage
Stress is the constant factor in everyday living that causes muscular tension, which in turn results in tightness in the muscles, reducing the flow of energy through the body. This energy could be in the form of blood and oxygen, nerves, lymph supply and reduction in energy-supply leads to people feeling fatigue, heaviness, reduced flexibility and limited range of joint movements. This also increases chances of strain and injury while leading to toxins building up in the body. A powerful body massage therapy can help the recipient to release this stress and allow healing to take place through re-directing the body’s own energy. A body massage can relieve problems like migraines, help in post injury rehabilitation, give comfort from whiplash and respiratory problems, pain due to arthritis or in the lower back, leg aches, circulatory and digestive/lower bowel disorders as well as neck and shoulder pain.
Guiding Steps On How To Give Massage
A body massage can benefit people of all ages, be it infants, children, pregnant women, elderly, infirm or those involved in athletic sports. The essential items needed to give a massage are aromatherapy oil (its better to have a calming massage blends oil), pre-heated for approximately 30 seconds in the microwave (helps in diffusing the oil and ease to rub into the recipient’s body), fluffy, soft towels to cover the massage area and offer partial covering to the subject, if desired. Soothing music will set the right tone for relaxation during massage as will the soft glow from candles.
- The subject can be seated on a table top, lying sideways with a pillow under the head and between the knees (recommended during pregnancy) or lying on the back.
- Keeping the person partially covered keeps the body temperature from dropping as relaxation sets in so this helps the recipient feel secure and comfortable.
- Wash hands and forearms before and after a massage and avoid contact with open wounds, warts and rashes as infections can be caused and some may be contagious.
- The oil/lotion is poured on the palm, rubbed into both hands and then slowly rubbed into the skin in small, circular motions.
- Beginning with a light touch is recommended, with gradual increase of pressure in tune with the responses of the receiver. A broad hand contact leading up to more area specific contact with just fingers, thumb and elbow can be used to massage and apply direct pressure.
- The massage can be finished off with repetition of several minutes of broad hand contact and the firm, kneading movements giving way to light, tapping motions that ease the blood circulation.
