Plantar Fasciitis Symptoms

Plantar fasciitis

is inflammation of the plantar fascia.

Plantar fascia

is the ligament between the base of the toes and the front of the heel bone. It is the fascia that supports the arch. In this article we give information on symptoms of plantar fasciitis.

Symptoms of plantar fascia are:

  • Severe pain in the bottoms of the feet.
  • The pain begins in the mornings and get worse throughout the day as the daily activities go on.
  • The pain is relieved when the foot gets eases ups or warmed up.
  • Continuous heel pain, under the heel and inside.
  • Pain at the site of origin of the attachment of the fascia.
  • Pain gets aggravated when pressed at the inside of the heel or along the arch.
  • The stretching of plantar fascia becomes painful.

Once subsided, the pain can recur if one stands or walks for long time. In some cases there may be pain in the outside border of the heel, especially if one has high arched feet.

Plantar fasciitis is also called as

heel spurs

, although they are not strictly the same. In heel spur, there is a bony growth at the attachments of the plantar fascia to the heel bone or calcaneus. Benign heel spur can be there with no symptoms at all. Painful heel spurs have similar symptoms as that of plantar fasciitis.

Diagnosis and Treatment:

Plantar fasciitis is diagnosed by taking medical history and physical examination. Depending on the cause, treatment is done. Some of the treatment techniques include cold therapy, plantar fasciitis taping techniques and night splints. Surgery is opted if the symptoms do not resolve. This is common for the those who have a rigid high arch.
