Can Bunion Re-occur?

It is estimated that there is about

9-10%

chances that bunion can recur after the surgery. It can be for several reasons like improper wearing of shoes, faulty foot mechanics and improper alignment of bones during the surgery and so on.

Bunion and bunion surgery:

A bony protuberances at the base of the big toe are called bunions. When the big toe angles in toward the other toes the condition is known as hallux valgus. A bunion is a biomechanical abnormality that is caused by several conditions such as flat feet, abnormal bone structure, certain neurological conditions and even genetic factors.

The Surgical Procedure:

Due to many recent innovations and developments, most of the bunion surgeries are successful. It is a small surgery that takes 1 to 2 hours of time and is normally performed on out-patient basis. A local anesthesia with intravenous sedation is given at the site. The procedure is chosen to correct the pathologies associated with the bunion and the extent of the deformation. It is an ambulatory procedure where the patient can walk immediately after the surgery. In some procedures it may take more time but on average the patient can be totally alright by 3 weeks following the surgery.

Post operative complications:

Study shows that about 33% of patients undergone the surgery complain about complications of the surgery. Some patients complain of reduced motion while some complain of pain.

Re-occurrence of bunion

can be one of the complications of the surgery. There may be other reasons for the recurrence and patient is advised to follow the instructions of the surgeon to prevent the recurrence of bunions.
