Heel pain is experienced by runners or others who take up exercising, when they train hard without rest. Running on uneven/new surfaces and wearing old /improper footwear which does not absorb the impact of running can also cause for heel pain while running.
The heel pain is caused to the inflammation of the plantar fascia – which is a thick band of tissue which runs across the bottom of the foot and connects the heel and the toes. Due to tears in the plantar fascia, it becomes inflamed resulting in pain while running.
Symptoms of Heel Pain when Running:
Running heel pain is characterized by a sharp pain at the heel of the foot. The pain is worst in the morning when you take the first steps. It may also come up during or after an activity.
Once pain is experienced while running, one should take rest for about 6 to 8 weeks. However, many people neglect taking rest. This aggravates the pain and the healing period.
Running Heel Pain Treatment:
Here are few ways to reduce running heel pain
- Rest: Once you experience the pain, take rest by avoid running for few weeks (6 to 8 weeks). Taking rest will help in resolving the pain and inflammation. You can try swimming, cycling or yoga.
- Ice: Apply cool compresses on the heel for 20 minutes, 4 times a day. This will reduce the pain and inflammation
- Stretch: Stretch your arches to take the pressure off the plantar fascia
Proper shoes: Wearing shoes which absorb the impact of running is important. Orthotics can also help in reducing the pain
If the pain does not resolve in 2 weeks, do consult your podiatrist. He/she might recommend night splints, anti-inflammatory medications, steroid injections or orthotics to treat the running heel pain.
