Metatarsal foot pain is the ache in the ball of your foot or the pain at the forefoot bones. Running, jogging, walking – all put stress on the ball of the foot. But, due to high impact activity, lack of rest, or ill-fitted footwear, the ball of the foot bears excessive pressure. As a result, there can be metatarsal foot pain or pain in the ball of the foot.
Metatarsal foot pain involves the metatarsal bones – the long bones present in the front portion of the feet, just below your toes. Metatarsal foot pain can start after you train or exercise continuously. Wearing ill-fitting footwear also can cause pain. If you do not rest after initial signs of pain, the pain would be persistent even if you walk or rest your feet. There can also be numbing and tingling sensation in your toes.
Metatarsal Foot Pain Causes:
- High impact activity such as jumping, running
- Intense exercise or training
- Ill-fitted footwear such as high heels
- Obesity
Metatarsal Foot Pain Symptoms:
The following are the symptoms of metatarsal foot pain:
- Pain at the ball of the foot, the portion of feet just behind the toes
- Pain which worsens with activity and resolves with rest
- Numbing, tingling sensation in the toes
- Sharp, shooting pain
Metatarsal Foot Pain Treatment:
- If you experience metatarsal foot pain, immediate rest is recommended. Avoiding pressure on the feet will reduce the pain and inflammation.
- Applying ice pack to the area for 20 minutes can relieve the pain
- Shoe insoles or shoe pads can take the pressure off the metatarsals and relieve the pain
Wearing footwear which can absorb the pressure generated due to high impact activities is recommended. Proper rest between activities, comfortable foot wear and avoiding excessive strain can help in preventing ball of the foot pain.
