Eczema is a skin problem which is characterized by itchy skin, rashes and dry skin. Eczema on feet in usually seen along with eczema on hand. Due to the itchiness of skin, people usually scratch the feet and this can lead to worsening of the condition. In some cases, blistering and oozing on the feet is also seen.
What Causes Foot Eczema?
Allergy is the major reason behind eczema. Food allergies can cause eczema on the feet. Infants who have eczema may actually be suffering from food allergy. Other allergy-triggering sources are pollen, pet dander, dust mite. So, if you have persistent eczema, get yourself tested for allergies. Your allergist may conduct skin tests to diagnose allergies and treat foot eczema.
Foot eczema is also caused due to harsh or rough fabrics which irritate the skin. Footwear material or material of the socks can trigger foot eczema. Harsh soaps and detergents, stress, extreme hot or cold temperatures can also irritate the foot and cause eczema.
Treatment of Foot Eczema:
Here are the following ways to treat foot eczema:
- Moisturizing your feet regularly can reduce eczema
- Applying cold compresses can relieve the itching caused due to eczema
- Over-the- counter creams such as hydrocortisone can treat eczema
- Topical corticosteroid creams can relive the inflammation and itching. Oral corticosteroids are used to treat severe cases of foot eczema
- Antibiotics may be prescribed if infection is detected
Foot Eczema Prevention:
Following are the tips to prevent eczema on foot
- Avoid contact with eczema-triggering fabrics or rough fabrics such as wool. If a particular footwear or socks causes eczema, try switching to another one and see if the symptoms subside
- Avoid allergy-causing factors such as pollen, mold, dander, dust and foods which cause allergies
- Avoid sudden changes in temperature
- Avoid harsh soaps and deodorants
If your foot eczema does not resolve after conservatory treatment, do consult a dermatologist who can prescribe a stronger medication to treat the eczema.
