Hanglund’s Deformity is a bony enlargement at the back of the heel bone, which is primarily caused due to the pressure from the shoes. The bony outgrowth, similar to a bump, is formed underneath the achilles tendon. Over time, this bump can squeeze the soft tissues against the shoes and result in pain, redness and inflammation at the back of the heel.
Hanglund’s deformity also results in bursitis (inflammation of the bursa – the fluid-filled sac between the tendon and the bone). This deformity is also known as pump bump.
Symptoms of Hanglund’s Deformity
- A bump at the back of the heel
- Redness, pain at the back of the heel, which makes it difficult to walk while wearing shoes
- Callus at the back of the heel
What Causes Hanglund’s Deformity?
Hanglund’s deformity is caused when the back of the heel is subjected to pressure from the shoes. Due to the constant rubbing, a bony protrusion develops at the point where Achilles tendon meets the heel bone. Due to the bony growth, the soft tissues near the heel are squeezed against the shoes. This further leads to redness, swelling and pain at the back of the heel.
Diagnosis of Hanglund’s Deformity:
After physical examination, your doctor would order X-rays – which can help to determine the presence of Hanglund’s deformity.
Treatment of Hanglund’s Deformity:
- Medications can help in reducing the pain and inflammation
- Heel pads placed at the back of the heel can provide relief from the pain
- Backless shoes, such as clogs can remove the heel pressure and provide relief
- Cool compresses – applying ice on the area for 20 minutes can relive pain and inflammation
- Stretching exercises and physical therapy can also help in relieving the pain associated with this problem
If conservative treatment does not work for this problem, a surgery may be required for relief. The surgery involves reducing the bony outgrowth. To prevent Hanglund’s deformity, it is important to wear comfortable shoes and avoid high-heeled shoes or shoes which are ill-fitted.
