Wearing shoes which do not fit properly and using old running shoes are the primary reasons for running foot pain.
Other reasons which cause foot pain while running are:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Tendinitis
- Over-pronation
- Injury to the toes
- Blistering
Tips to Avoid Running Foot Pain:
Here are a few tips to prevent foot pain while running:
- Proper running shoes: Most running shoes have extra padding and arch support to reduce the impact of running. Buy a running shoe which is comfortable and make sure it has enough space between the toes and the edge of the shoe. The running shoes should be replaced once they get old
- Keep your feet dry: Excess warmth and moisture can promote the growth of fungus, resulting in blistering. Hence, use socks which can absorb the moisture and reduce the friction between the shoe and the feet
- Warm-up: Warming up for 10 minutes by walking can help in reducing injuries and foot pain. Warming prepares your body for action and increases blood circulation. Stretching exercises before running also help in preventing foot pain
- Avoid overuse: Increase your speed and distance gradually. Suddenly increasing the intensity can lead to injury or foot pain
- Avoid running if you feel pain: In case of foot pain while running, slow down and rest. Continuing to run can aggravate the injury. Rest, Icing and pain medications can help in reducing the pain
To avoid running foot pain, it is also advisable to cool down and take walking breaks in between the running sessions. If the pain is severe and does not resolve even after rest, do consult your doctor for proper treatment.
