Pain in the arch of the foot, accompanied with inflammation can make it difficult to perform your daily activities. This kind of pain is mainly caused due to overuse of the foot or wearing improper foot wear. If you experience arch pain, it is recommended reduce activities and take conservative treatment to reduce the pain.
What Causes Pain in Arch of Foot?
Pain in the arch of foot can be caused due to:
- Foot Overuse- Running or jogging on hard surfaces, standing for long hours, straining the foot through extreme running, walking etc. can cause arch pain.
- Improper footwear which lacks support can strain the foot and cause in arch pain
- Plantar fasciitis- inflammation of the fibrous tissue which runs from the heel to the forefoot. Plantar fasciitis is caused due to the overuse of the foot such as standing for long time, running or walking on hard surfaces, and overpronation etc.
- Injury to the foot
- Stress fractures
Symptoms of Arch Pain:
The following are the symptoms of arch pain:
- Pain in the arch of the foot
- Swelling
- Burning sensation
Treating Pain in Arch of Foot:
- If you experience arch pain, it is recommended to reduce activities which can strain the foot. Resting the foot can relieve the pain.
- Ice should be applied for 20 minutes daily to reduce the pain and inflammation
- Over-the-counter medications can help in relieving the pain
- Wearing orthotics or foot insoles can support the foot arch and relieve the pain
Preventing Arch Pain:
- To prevent arch pain, wear shoes which provide proper support to the feet. Shift to new shoes after 6 months – wearing the same footwear for long can reduce the shoe’s absorption power and cause foot pain
- Avoid wearing high-heeled shoes
- Avoid running, walking on hard surfaces. Standing for long hours, overuse of the foot by walking, running for long time, should be avoided.
If pain in the arch of the foot persists after conservative treatment, consult your podiatrist. He/she can diagnose the problem and treat it. A podiatrist would also be able to recommend good orthotics which can reduce the stress to your feet.
