Foot tendonitis is the strain, degeneration or rupture of the tendons of the foot. Foot tendonitis is caused due excessive strain of the foot in activities such as running, hiking etc. People who are involved in jobs which require excessive standing, walking are at risk of developing foot tendonitis.
Due to excessive strain on the foot, initially, one can develop symptoms such as pain and swelling which may come and go intermittently. If the strain is consistent, the fibers of the tendon pull apart and may develop into foot tendonitis. Foot tendonitis causes pain and swelling which makes it difficult to perform day-to-day activities.
Tendons involved in Foot Tendonitis:
The following tendons may be involved in foot tendonitis:
- Achilles tendon
- Anterior tibial tendon
- Posterior tibial tendon
- Peroneal tendon
Symptoms of Foot Tendonitis:
The following are the symptoms of foot tendonitis:
- Pain
- Inflammation
- Burning or stabbing sensation
If you feel pain when your feet touches the ground, while walking, standing etc. you may have foot tendonitis.
Foot Tendonitis Treatment:
- Rest the foot as much as possible for few days. This will allow the pain and inflammation to subside
- Cool compresses can help in reducing the inflammation and pain
- Foot insoles or orthoses can support the arch region and help in relieving foot tendonitis
- In severe cases, foot tendonitis may require surgery
To avoid foot tendonitis, one should wear shoes with proper support and avoid foot overuse. If the foot pain and inflammation does not subside with rest and cool compresses, consult your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
