People with flat feet have their foot arch partially or completely touching the ground. In such cases the entire sole of the foot touches the ground, and the inward curve from the toe to the heel is absent. The arch support which is important for running, walking is absent in a person with flat feet. Hence, flat footed people should select the right shoes which provide support and stability.
People with flat feet tend to over pronate, i.e. roll their foot inwards while running, walking. A good shoe for flat feet prevents over pronation and supports the arch area of the foot.

While buying shoes for flat feet, make sure it has labels such as stability, motion control or extra support. Here are few tips to buy shoes for flat feet:
- Firm heel counter: The shoe should have a firm heel counter i.e. the rear part of the shoe should be firm, for extra support and stability. You can squeeze the heel counter to ensure it is firm.
- Firm mid-soles: Firm mid soles prevent improper rolling of the foot and overpronation. Firm mid soles also provide comfort and stability. While buying, make sure the mid-sole does not bend easily when twisted.
- Avoid shoes with multiple padded layers: Multiple padded layers or too much cushioning can cause added pressure, pronation problems and can make your flat feet roll inwards. So, choose a shoe with a single layer of padding .
- Avoid inward soles that are curved: Avoid inward soles that are curved as they can affect the stability and result in pronation. Make sure the arch area of the shoe is straight and firm and avoid curved ones.
