Ankle sprain is caused when the ligaments in the ankle joints overstretch or tear due to unnatural or awkward movement of the foot. Ligaments are the bands of fibrous tissue which connect one bone to another and also stabilize the joints. Ankle sprain can result in pain, swelling, tenderness and inability to move the foot. While severe ankle sprains require immediate medical attention, mild ankle sprains can be relieved by home treatment.
Ankle sprain is caused due to the twisting, rolling, and turning of the foot in an unnatural way. Ankle Sprains are usually caused due to falls, walking or running on an uneven surface, and landing awkwardly after jumping.
Treating Ankle Sprain At Home:
Here are a few ways to treat ankle sprain at home:
- Rest: Rest your injured foot as much as possible. This can be done by using a cane or walking stick to avoid weight to the injured area.
- Ice: Applying ice packs to the injured area reduces the pain, swelling, and inflammation. Apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes, for 3 times a day or more for relief
- Compress: Applying an elastic bandage, ACE bandage to the sprained ankle can reduce and control the swelling. However, make sure you do not wrap the bandage too tightly
- Elevation: Keeping the injured ankle elevated will drain the excess fluid back and this will reduce the swelling. Elevate your foot to the level of your hip or higher
- Protect: Protect your ankle by immobilizing with a splint or an elastic wrap. This will protect your ankle from further injury
If the pain is severe, it recommended that you contact your doctor. He/she would take an X-ray or an MRI to determine the severity of ankle sprain or the possibility of a fracture. If the ankle sprain is severe, your doctor can recommend ankle brace and rehabilitation exercises.
