Itchy feet can be caused due to many reasons such as athlete’s foot, dry feet etc. Itchy feet usually have cracked skin, redness, and patches etc. Recongnizing the source of itchy feet is important as it helps you to get the right treatment. Here are the different types of itchy feet, causes, prevention and treatment.
Athlete’s foot:
Athelete’s foot is an infection caused by the fungus tinea pedis. This makes the the feet itchy, red and sore. Athletes foot is caused due to moisture trapped in the feet due to closed shoes,socks, or humid environment. Treatment options include anti-fungal creams, tablets or powders. For preventing athlete’s foot, you would have to keep your feet dry by wearing cotton socks and changing regularly. Wearing footwear in public showers, locker rooms, gym floor can prevent athlete’s foot.
Ring Worm:
Ring worm is an infection caused by the fungus tinea Corporis. This results in itchy, ring shaped patches on the feet. People working near animals are at risk of ring worm. To treat ring worm antifungal creams, powders or showers can be used. To prevent ring worm, you should stay away from animals or people with fungal infection.
Eczema:
Eczema is the inflammation of the skin resulting in redness, itchiness, blistering etc. This condition is also known as dermatitis. Eczema is caused due to the exposure to a particular irritant substance. Atopic eczema, allergic contact eczema, irritant contact eczema are some of the types of eczema. To treat eczema, you would have to take steroid creams and antihistamines. Eczema can be prevented by staying away from the irritant substance.
Dry Feet:
Dry feet can cause redness, itching, flaky patches on the feet. Dry feet are caused due to improperly fitting shoes, low humidity etc. To prevent dry feet, use a mild soap and exfoliate the dry skin using a pumice stone. Massaging the feet with moisturizer regularly, wearing proper shoes can help you to overcome dry feet.
Other conditions:
Juvenile Plantar dermatosis, pitted keratolysis are other conditions which can cause itchy feet. Abrasion of shoes, ill fitting socks, sweating and moisture also result in itchy feet. Hence, it is important to take care of your feet to prevent infections and keep your feet healthy.
