What is Allergic Contact Dermatitis?
Allergic Contact Dermatitis is a condition that occurs when the skin comes in contact with an allery producing substance. Often, these substances (allergens) are harmless. Unfortunately, some people are born with hypersensitivity whereas, some others develop hypersensitivity to the allergens. On exposure to allergens, these people experience an allergic reaction.
Causes of Allergic Contact Dermatitis:
- Most common causes of contact dermatitis of foot and ankle are exposure to poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac
- Exposure to dyes of shoes and sneakers can also cause the dermatitis
- The rubber sneakers also can cause rashes and scaly skin in some people who are hypersensitive to them
- The heat and sweat generated during exercise may worsen the condition of the dermatitis
Laboratory Diagnosis:
- The podiatrist may take the skin sample to examine under microscope for the presence of any dermatophytes or other fungi
Treatment:
- Usually, the treatment for Allergic Contact Dermatitis is done using a topical corticosteroid cream or an oral antihistamine
- The podiatrist can recommend hypoallergenic shoes that are less allergic or that do not cause any allergic reaction
- In severe conditions, oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents may be given by the podiatrist
- The podiatrist may take the skin sample to examine under microscope for the presence of any dermatophytes or other fungi
