Managing diabetes does not only require keeping in check your insulin levels. You also need to keep a check on your eyes, your skin and even your feet. Try these tips for diabetic footcare management.
- Inspect your feet daily for any redness, swelling, cuts, blisters or nail problems.
- Wash your feet daily with lukewarm water using a mild soap.
- Dry your feet thoroughly after washing. Dry well between the toes too.
- Moisturize your feet using moisturizing lotions. This will help you hydrate your skin and prevent it from cracking or itching.
- Avoid applying moisturizer in between your toes. This will encourage fungal infection.
- Cut your nails straight across in order to prevent ingrown toenails.
- Never trim corns or calluses yourself. Go to the doctor and let him do it for you if you do not want to risk a problem worse than this.
- Change your socks daily.
- Wear socks made up of natural fabrics – preferably cotton.
- Avoid wearing socks with tight elastic bands that hamper blood circulation.
- Wear socks to bed if your feet are cold during night.
- Wear comfortable shoes. Check for enough room for your toes so that they are not crammed inside.
- Always shake and inspect your shoe before wearing. Jerk out dust and pebbles that might have come in.
- Make use of orthotics or footwear specially designed for diabetic feet.
- Never walk out barefoot. You may end up injuring yourself.
- Avoid smoking as it restricts blood circulation in your feet.
- Visit a good podiatrist to get your feet examined every few months.
