Nail Polish Allergy

Neatly clipped, filed and painted nails are the final touches without which a pedicure may seem incomplete. But if you are allergic to Nail Polish you may not feel satisfied with your pedicure without its final touches.

Nail Polishes are basically made up of Chemicals like phthalates, solvents and formaldehydes, fragrances, synthetic preservatives and dyes. A few of us may not really be tolerant to these chemicals hence the risk of allergy.

If you are allergic to Nail Polishes you may suffer from redness and itchiness around the fingernail and nail bed when you apply them. Some people may get rashes on the other parts of the body or even asthma-like attacks from the smell of the polish itself.

Unfortunately, you don’t really have many  safe alternatives although some nail polishes may be free from phthalates and formaldehyde. But you wouldn’t know if you are allergic to solvents, the dyes and the preservatives in the polish instead of phthalates and formaldehyde. What makes things even difficult is that the FDA doesn’t monitor the ingredients of the cosmetics. That is why you wouldn’t find a list of ingredients on the bottle of your nail polish.

Still, you could try a few brands that use fewer chemicals than most companies do. But its better to stay away nail polish and nail polish remover, completely if you are allergic to them.

But don’t worry you can still have wonderful looking nails. If you want them colored why not try ‘Henna’?

Henna or dried and powdered leaves of plant Lawsonia inermis produces a red-orange dye molecule, lawsone. This molecule has an affinity for bonding with protein, and thus has been used to dye skin, hair, fingernails. When you apply Henna paste and leave it on your nails for an hour, it will give out a deep reddish-brown color. Women in Middle East Asia and South Asia very commonly use the Henna paste to naturally color their nails and decorate their feet and palms with creative patterns. It is 100% safe and good for the skin if you don’t mind being stuck with only one color on your nails.

Colored or plain, you can maintain your nails beautifully by following these simple tips:

1. Keep your fingernails and toe-nails clean.
2. Soak them frequently in a bowl of warm water and gentle soap.
3. File them weekly.
4. Use a nail buffer to keep them ridge free and shinier.
5. For extra white and shine, use a half of a lemon as a buffer.
