Pregnancy is a journey in the life of any woman towards destination motherhood. Many changes occur in the body of an expectant mother. A lot many complaints are associated with pregnancy and foot pain is common among them. One of the reasons is due to the normal weight gained in this period. As a result of this more weight is experienced towards the front and the center of gravity of the body gets changed. There is change in posture and carriage due to this weight bearing, and the weight distribution gets new altered position. There is an addition of pressure in the knees and the feet.
Among other problems related with foot are edema and over-pronation. These problems are associated with pain in the heels, arch of leg and foot. Cramping and varicose veins are also experienced due to weight gain. Hence it is important to take care of feet and educate more about foot health along with other prenatal care.
Causes
The two common problems that triggers during the period of pregnancy is edema and over-pronation. Over-pronation is also known as flat feet. In this the feet arch gets flattened due to weight and the weight on feet is toward the inner side while walking. While walking extreme stress is experienced in the plantar fascia region. Inflammation is caused. The plantar fascia is the tissue with fibers from heel to the foot. Walking becomes extremely painful with increase in stress on calves, back and feet.
Edema is referred with the swelling in feet. This swelling occurs in the last trimester of pregnancy. This happens due to excessive blood that gets accumulated during pregnancy. The bulging uterus exerts pressure in the vessels carrying blood in pelvic region and the legs as a result of this blood circulation slows down and the feet become purplish in color. Incase of swellings in face or hands consult the doctor immediately.
Prevention and treatment
Over-pronation can be treated with orthotics. The orthotics should be accurately designed for appropriate arch support. Appropriate fitted footwear is important with cushioning and shock absorption.
Keeping the feet at an elevated position can minimize edema. One can take the help of small stool for this. Right footwear is necessary. Seamless socks are good, as they do not compress blood circulation. While traveling take breaks and stretch the feet. Exercising and walking and replenishing the body with plenty of water is necessary. Finally eating right without high salt content is recommended.
