A nail disorder is a condition caused by injury to the nail or disease or imbalance in the body. Most, if not all, of you have had some type of common nail disorder. In some cases you can cosmetically improve a nail disorder. When in doubt, please see your physician for the proper diagnosis.

There are certain disorders or illness that can affect the nail. Given below are a few disorders and how to deal with them.

Hematoma:  A Hematoma is the result of trauma to the nail plate.  It can happen from simply trapping your finger or toe in the car door to a sports injury. The nail bed will bleed due to this trauma, and the blood is trapped between the nail bed and the nail plate.  A hematoma may also indicate a fractured bone.

Remedy:  If the hematoma is treated within the first few hours of forming, your podiatrist will create a tiny hole in the nail plate using a fine-point drill or scalpel. This releases the blood and relieves pain. The nail may also be removed to treat a bone fracture beneath the hematoma.

Ingrown toenail:  Toe injuries that change the nail’s contour can lead to an ingrown toenail. This can also be congenital. Toe deformities can put pressure between the nail and soft tissues, eventually forcing the nail to grow into the skin.

Remedy:  Surgery is often necessary to ease the pain and remove the offending nail. Only a portion of the nail may be removed.

Onychauxis: In this condition your nails become abnormally thick. This normally happens with your toenails. This can be caused by an unbalanced diet; infection or it could be hereditary.

Remedy:  Filing and buffing the nail can reduce its thickness.

Vertical ridges:  The nail plate grows forward on the nail bed in a ‘rail and groove’ effect, much like a train rides on its’ tracks.

Remedy:  Ridged nails will improve through re-hydration of the nail plate with twice daily applications of a good quality nail and cuticle oil containing Jojoba and Vitamin E.
