Edema is the swelling of feet during the last few months of pregnancy.
Causes of Edema
During pregnancy the Uterus enlarges and starts exerting pressure on to the blood vessels in legs and pelvis slowing the blood circulation in these areas.
The body also releases hormones that cause relaxation of the ligaments in the birth canal. This causes the ligaments in the feet to relax too thus the feet lengthen and widen. This is why you will notice an increase in your shoe size.
Swelling is also a result of water retention in the body. It may cause the foot to turn purple in color.
Treatment and Prevention
- When you sit, elevate your feet. Do not let them hang down.
- Buy shoes that have rigid sole that allows comfortable bending at the toe.
- When you wash your feet, make sure you dry them thoroughly. Moisture between toes may lead to ulceration.
- Keep checking for size alterations in your feet.
- Do not sit or drive for long hours. Keep walking around and do chores that may aid blood circulation in your feet.
- Do exercises that help improve blood circulation.
- Drink approximately 8 glasses of water to hydrate your body and prevent water retention.
- Avoid salty and fried foods as they promote water retention.
