For some people the bone behind the heel bone, in the area where the Achilles tendon attaches to the bone, enlarges thus causing the Pump Bump. The Pump Bump is also known as Haglund’s Deformity and technically known as Retroocular Bursitis.
Symptoms
People suffering from the Pump Bump show common symptoms like – swelling and redness at the back of the heel.
Cause
The primary reason behind the formation of the Pump Bump is the pressure against the shoe. High heels and especially the stitching of a heel counter can contribute greatly to aggravating the problem.
Treatment
The inflammation and swelling behind the heel can be relieved with ice, compression and change of shoe gear. Achilles pads, tortoise and heel grip pads also help temporarily. Pain can be relieved by Cortisone injections although excessive dosage of cortisone may rupture the Achilles tendon.
If the deformity is severe and the bone is enlarged, surgery may be required.
