Take a close look at your foot. Does your big toe lean toward your second toe, rather than pointing straight ahead. Can you see a bump on the side of your big toe? Looks like you are suffering from Bunion.
Bunion is a very common progressive disorder where the big toe leans on the second toe. This throws the bones in the toe out of the alignment and slowly producing a characteristic bump which becomes increasingly prominent over the years.
Causes
- Inherited faulty mechanical structure of the foot
- Abnormal foot function, excessive pronation to ankle problems
- Genetic and neuromuscular diseases leading to muscular imbalance.
- Weak Ligaments
- Rheumatoid or osteoarthritis.
- Wearing shoes that do not give enough room for toes that make the deformity progressively worse.
Symptoms
Some people never have any symptoms. While some may show symptoms like pain or soreness, numbness, inflammation, redness and burning sensation at the later stages of the Bunion.
Treatment
- Wear shoes that give good room for the toes and not aggravate your condition
- Bunion Pads that help minimize your pain
- Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory drugs that may help to relieve pain, if any.
- Application of Ice that may help reduce inflammation and pain
In severely painful cases, surgery would prove to be the best treatment. The doctor would correct your bone deformity and soft tissue changes that might have occurred.
