Feet are normally the most neglected part of our body. But if you give them their due attention, they may serve as important signals to various undiagnosed health problems. Conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular and kidney disease and even cancer in some cases can be spotted early on before they do permanent damage.
Sharon Plummer, a nurse practitioner with the Endocrinology Foot Clinic at the St. Louis University School of Medicine, explained that feet have the longest nerves and arteries in the body and that they’re at the lowest part of the body. That makes them the body’s early warning system.
Gravity is the reason, says Dr. Johnny Benjamin, director of the Joint Implant Center and Medical Specialty Procedures Surgery Center in Vero Beach, Fla. Disease can be detected because as your blood circulates to the lowest part of your body, if your heart isn’t strong enough to pump it back efficiently, problems arise.
You can spot the following problems with these symptoms
- Swelling on feet may suggest Cardiovascular problems and High Blood Pressure. Try pressing on the swollen area, if it leaves a divot it may mean that your heart is not functioning properly.
- Swelling may also indicate kidney disease.
- Sudden darkening of your toes may indicate a blood circulation problem.
- Unexplained sores and lacerations may signal diabetes.
Therefore, take good care of your feet and keep an eye on them for early signals.
