Have you noticed someone with a deformed toe? Did it seem like it was broken from the center? Then the person might be suffering from ‘Hammer Toe’

Symptoms
- The toe deforms at the proximal inter phalangeal joint due to which the base of the toe points upward and the end of the toe points down.
- A painful Corn develops on the under the metatarsal head at the base of the toe or top of the toe.
- There may be a bursa under the corn or instead of a corn.
Causes
- Hammer Toe is caused due to the following reasons:
- Some people may be prone due to hereditary Hammer Toe.
- Weaker small muscles in the foot may lead to Hammer Toe.
- Tight footwear that exerts extreme pressure may result in Hammer Toe.
Treatment
- Use padding to get pressure of the toe.
- If the toe is still flexible, as in the early stages, you can use splints or tape to correct the shape of the toe.
- If there is a painful corn this needs to be treated by a doctor.
- In case the conservative treatment is unsuccessful you will have to opt for surgery to rectify the deformity caused by Hammer Toe.
Your feet may be the last thing you would like to turn your attention but with a little care you can avoid an array of problems that may befall them. To avoid most of them, including Hammer Toe, wear good comfortable shoes that have extra room in the toes. Remember, healthy feet contribute a lot to a healthy body.
